An effective website should be considered an investment in your business, not just another expense. This means that it only costs you money if your visitors do not become a customer and buy your product of service. For that reason, it is important that you set-up your website the right way.
Below are several key things that you need to consider to make sure your website converts its share of visitors into customers:
What is your website about and what’s the benefit to your visitor?
You have only 3 to 6 seconds on average to keep a visitor on your web page. If the visitor is not convinced within seconds that your site is worth reading, they will leave as quickly as they arrived.
The best way to make your site “sticky” and retain visitors longer is to give them a compelling reason to stay. You need to clearly tell your website visitors which problem your product solves and why your solution is better than other solutions. This information needs be clearly visible and easily seen by your visitors.
Is your website trustworthy?
Tell your visitors who you are and provide them accurate contact information. If possible you should add customer testimonials to your site to help your visitors see that you are a real company with a good reputation that they can trust.
If you are a member of industry organizations, have received awards, or are a member in good standing of the Better Business Bureau you need to tell your website visitors. And, add links to the sites to make it easy for your visitors to verify the information!
Is your website easy to navigate and does it look professional?
Another way to create trust is to use a professional website design. It doesn’t have to be an expensive custom design but at minimum should be attractive, non-cluttered, with no wild colors. Your site should be easy to navigate and find information of interest and must use a clean layout that makes it easy to read your web pages.
If your website displays ads make sure that they do not distract your website visitors too much from the real content.
Make it as easy as possible for your website visitors
You should always tell your website visitors what you want them to do: “Call for a free consultation,” “Sign-up for a free account,” “Download our free software,” or “Subscribe to our newsletter.”
Focus on a single task. Don’t ask them to complete several tasks. Make sure that you tell the visitor in great detail why it would be good for them to complete that task. You can also try out different tasks on other pages to see what works best with your visitors. Also, make sure that you give your visitors easy to follow directions to complete the task. The easier you make it for your visitor, the better success you’ll have.
Make your visitors comfortable and give them a risk-free experience
One key way to accomplish this is to add a privacy statement and any disclaimers to your website that clarify your offer. Make sure that they know you will respect their privacy – then deliver on your promise.
You should avoid complex registration forms only asking the visitor to give you the least amount of information that you need like name and email address. And, you should offer guarantees to show your website visitors that it is risk-free to complete a task on your website. Again, always deliver on your promises!
Give search engines what they want and make you website visitors happy
The title and the major tag line on your web page should contain the main selling proposition of your website and one or two good keywords.
When a potential visitor sees your website in the search results, the title will show them that the your website is a good match for their search. The content on your web page should further confirm this and provide your visitor more detail.
If you take these tips to heart you can begin to increase the conversion rate of your website. In turn, you should be able to increase your revenue without increasing the number of website visitors.
Keep in mind that the name of the game is conversion
Having lots of visitors with poor conversion is of no value. But attracting the right visitors with good customer conversion will increase your revenue and help your business grow.
